🎀 ― a childhood memory.

"Higher, Ian, higher! You're going to have to get higher than that if you're going to do a flip," Bo shouted at Ian from the swing next to him. Kindergarten came with a lot of changes but the biggest change in Ian's life was acquiring Bo Turner as an instant best friend. The two were inseparable on the playground and that led to a much bolder Ian. Most games were Bo's idea and today, his older and much wiser (according to the soon to be held back first grader), Ian was attempting to do a flip off the swings for the first time in his life. It was a good thing this lesson happened at lunchtime and not on his grandmother's watch who might've been sent into a heart attack watching the events that soon unfolded.

"Come on, Ian!" Bo prompted from the sidelines once more. Ian was still working on his skills at being fearless, hell, he'd only just learned how to pump by himself on the swings a few months ago and getting up to velocity and height was unattainable for the young tike. That didn't stop the peer pressure from getting to him as Ian let go prematurely and without the proper condition wound up falling flat on his tailbone. A wail rang out and before Ian knew it half the playground was swarming the shy kindergartener with a sore butt. Tears and pain shot through him as a recess attendant rushed him to the nurses office.

That day as he was forced to sit on an ice pack for the rest of the class period Ian decided some things might be best learned when he was a lot older as a first grader like Bo.

Frankenstein was the last novel Ian had read in Ms. Adams class before quitting his senior year. He had thoroughly enjoyed the book and is fortunate to have skipped out on writing any dissertation on the subject. He had left Shrike High feeling like the monster.

Looking at his reflection now in the mirror as the one year anniversary approaches of his attack he sees that same abomination again. Maybe he had never left.
